We are about to talk about a dream location, one of those places that, in the collective imagination, only exist in fairy tales or films. Instead, once again, nature amazes us and makes us realise that, sometimes, reality is much more fascinating and surprising than any cinematic special effect.
It is nothing new to value the beauty of the Maldives: an earthly paradise made up of white beaches and fine sand, crystal-clear blue sea, colourful flora and fauna unique in the world.
There is one island in the Maldives, called Vaadhoo, that has an extra special feature. During the night, it seems that the stars in the sky also want to take a dip in the blue sea. In fact, luminous waves appear on the shoreline, creating a magical, dreamlike atmosphere that is undoubtedly unique in the world. What is this phenomenon and what causes it?
The 'sea of stars' of Vaadhoo, Maldives
The waves of the sea turn into a patch of starry sky. Millions of visitors flock to observe this beautiful phenomenon and remain open-mouthed in front of a true spectacle of nature. Silence is a must, but it is easy to respect it. One cannot help but be speechless in front of these luminous particles invading the warm waters of the Maldives.

The magic continues if you dip your feet into this enchanted water and take a walk on the beach. Looking over your shoulder, you can make out your own footprints, which also have that bright blue shimmer, just like that of the sea. It sounds too good to be true, and yet it is!
Scientific explanation: The 'luminescent plankton
Although it would be fantastic to believe that all this is really the work of magic, there is a scientific explanation linked to the phenomenon. What is the cause of the luminescent blue light characteristic of Vaadhoo beach? It is some organisms endowed with bioluminescence. This is a particular condition developed by phytoplankton, a collection of many micro-organisms that use dissolved inorganic substances to produce an organic one.
To accomplish this, they need solar radiation as an energy source. Blue light, in particular, is produced by a protein called'luciferase'.

Why do these organisms produce this phenomenon? It is a weapon of defence against predators. The explanation, therefore, is much less romantic than people think, but it does not detract from the natural spectacle.
Where is Vaadhoo? Here is how to get to the bioluminescent beach
Vaadhoo is an island that is part of theRaa Atoll in the Maldives. To get there, it is necessary to use the plane. All flights arrive at Malé International Airport. Many resorts or some tourist organisations in the Maldives organise special tours to Vaadhoo Island.
There are also special atmospheric boat trips departing at sunset, specially organised to fully enjoy the bioluminescence phenomenon.
